HISTORY

Like many other German families, the von Mayers were deeply affected by the events of Germany during the last 60 years back all the way to WW2. Friedrich’s maternal grandfather served in the German army during World War Two and survived the war. Before the fall of Berlin to the Russian army, the von Mayer family attempted to flee Berlin to move west towards Düsseldorf but failed. They made it as far as Potsdam before the chaos and fighting drove the family into hiding in that area. After the end of the war they returned to Berlin or what was more or less left of it prior to reconstruction.

During the occupation of Germany, they were relocated to a new house in what was later to become the American sector of the city. His parents met during university and began living together in an apartment in Zehlendorf. They never married despite pressure from their families to do so and they have proven that marriage is not required to be a happy couple who have a strong relationship. Friedrich and his twin Tobias were born to Johannes and Helga von Mayer in February 28, 1984 in West Berlin.

A conflictive child, Friedrich has never been a well-adjusted kid; when younger, he used to be very withdrawn and quiet. He had tantrums out of the blue around his parents and brother but generally behaved well in public. Though some of his relatives considered him to be a weird, silent-sullen kid. He was resentful almost for reasons no one knew. Now in his early teens it is more obvious that he has authority issues. He has a rocky relationship with his parents despite the fact that they are what many would consider ‘model’ parents. That is not to say Friedrich’s parents are perfect. Like most parents they have their flaws but they are dedicated to their children- within the limits- after all both are career oriented people. They love their children but sometimes they failed to notice things.

When Friedrich was in Elementary school he used to be overly shy with other children and generally got picked on. Not wanting to appear silly or weak, he never told his parents or his teachers, therefore the incidents getting increasingly worse until it all came to a rather ugly end. The day of the incident had been a sunny October afternoon- odd for autumn weather- but it had been a relatively nice, warm day. Walking back from school- their apartment was a few blocks away- a group of kids from school made to follow and pick on Friedrich. As the brother sped up to cross to street and get away from the group one of the older boys snatched Friedrich around the arm. Fear and genuine anger filled him.

It was then that his telekinetic abilities kicked in. Whether it was the panic of the assault or the fact that his twin was in near proximity, Friedrich managed to fling one of the boys back onto the road against a passing car. Since then, he has kept it in mind not to use his powers or to use them only with his twin around, because Friedrich trusts him not to let things out of hand. After this incident Friedrich changed.

Of course being in the scene of such an incident had repercussions. His parents were called into school and the whole incident was discussed until teachers and parents realized that the boy had been bullied. They dismissed the other boys’ tale of seeing the bully ‘fly’ as if pushed by some invisible force onto the street. Nevertheless the damage was done and the other kid was dead.

The accident and realization of his power shocked the nine-year old terribly. He withdrew and stopped eating regularly, and his temper outbursts became more pronounced, always directed at his parents or authorities. These quieted down after a while but his parents were worried and decided that after he should see a councilor. Again, no use and after a few sessions the woman merely wrote Friedrich off as going through ‘a difficult phase after the accident’ and that he would eventually stop.

His parents both being pro-American and having been employed as officials for Federal Republic of Germany enrolled him and his brother at the John F. Kennedy School after he finished elementary school. They believed in the need for an education like this to give their children all the opportunities they could have for their lives. Also they thought that a change of environment and exposure to something different would perhaps help Friedrich with his attitude.

Apparently it had the desired effect. Friedrich gradually eased up and adjusted to his new school making more friends. Still, his twin is the most important friend he has and he is sure to include him in whatever that Friedrich is planning to do- except if it is something that will get them into trouble. Friedrich would not put Tobias into trouble.

After the dissolution of the Federal Republic of Germany and the creation of a united government, Friedrich’s parents went to work for the Social Democratic Party. It was natural for them to take this course, always having been actively involved with the ongoing political events of the country. Of course, they also exerted pressure for Tobias and Friedrich to follow this same path into politics and to work for a political party in the future. It is something Friedrich is not keen on as he has an intense dislike for politics. Blame it on being exposed to it from a young age.

Although the wall is gone, many West Berliners continue to refer to themselves as West Germans, and Friedrich’s generation is no exception to this rule, though there are signs of reintegration between the East and West. Judgmental and more than a little prejudiced for his age, he does consider East Germans different. It is very rare that he’ll come out and state it like that, but he’ll be thinking it and he’ll probably blurt out some derogatory comment about that if angered. When angered, Friedrich tends to go for the most insulting, offensive and vicious insults, especially if he knows he can get away without physically coming to blows after doing so.

Despite the ongoing war Friedrich is a fourteen year old, soon to be fifteen and he leads his life like one.

PERSONALITY

Friedrich is far from the picture of maturity. He prefers to leave all that to his brother and chooses to be rather irresponsible and unorganized with all aspects of his life. Erratic as he tends to be, when he has his heart set on something, he will work towards that goal regardless of what may happen, regardless of the cost.

He also happens to have a short temper; it is made even shorter when he is put under any pressure and he tends to act out on impulse because of it. At school he is part of the ‘rebel’ crowd. Naturally this also implies that he has a more conflictive side. While he does, Friedrich’s never gone so far as to anything to class him as a delinquent. However, it wouldn’t be too harsh to push him into that area.

At times he can also feel threatened by the people around him; he’s a bit on the paranoid side, fearing that everyone around him have the worst possible intentions in mind for him. In these moments he will lash out and push everyone away, even his own twin. Once this mood goes away Friedrich will become very sociable and almost too agreeable- almost to the point of trying too hard- as if he feels guilty for something no one else knows about.

In the past, Friedrich used to be very shy, and although he does not appear that way now, he still perhaps retains this quality deep down. He’ll deny it to everyone, even his twin, as he finds the quality of being ‘shy’ an embarrassing label to be placed under. Friedrich is very smart, too smart for his own good, to the point where he’s even a little twisted in his logic at times. Again, this side is not often seen by many people and kept in check by his twin who happens to bring out Friedrich’s more positive characteristics. These are few but there are there.

Although he is not overly friendly, he has made a few friends in the last years and is even part of a clique, playing the role of the ‘cool’, ‘daring’, ‘rebellious’ one. Friedrich is nice to most people around him, unless for some reason they irritate him badly. His grades are nothing to be proud of but Friedrich is quite a smart boy. This comes across when one speaks with him as he is clearly able to grasp concepts no other fifteen year old would.

Lastly Friedrich does care deeply about those people close to him. It is not a side he shows often because he does not wish to dwell on it and perhaps he is even a little embarrassed to admit to it. He can be caring and affectionate. He mostly acts like this towards his twin, on few occasions with his mother. There is no way he would act like this around his friends as it would ruin his reputation at school

As of this date and time, Friedrich finds the whole community to be some kind if really odd –as well as perverse- hoax and wants to keep himself and his brother out of it.
